Himarë sits on a wide bay surrounded by rugged mountains and olive-covered hills. Its territory includes several villages and beaches—Spile, Livadhi, Potam, and Marachi—each offering turquoise waters and views across the Ionian Sea. The nearby Llogara National Park provides dramatic mountain scenery and connects Himarë to Vlorë via the scenic SH8 coastal highway.
The area has been inhabited since antiquity, once part of the ancient region of Epirus. The Himarë Castle (or Kastro), built on a hill above the town, dates back over 3,000 years and preserves Byzantine and Ottoman-era ruins, including the Church of St. Sergius and Bacchus. Himarë’s population historically maintained close cultural ties with Greece, which remain evident in language, religion, and architecture.
Himarë is a growing yet still low-key destination on the Albanian Riviera. Visitors are drawn to its beaches such as Livadhi, Jalë, Gjipe, and Aquarium, as well as Porto Palermo Castle, a triangular fortress attributed to Ali Pasha of Tepelena. Outdoor activities include kayaking, coastal hiking to nearby coves, and mountain treks to Pilur village. The town’s promenade hosts traditional tavernas, seafood restaurants, and a lively evening “xhiro” (stroll) culture.
Himarë is about 230 km south of Tirana (4 – 5 hours by car or bus) and 60 km north of Sarandë. The closest international airports are in Tirana and on the nearby Greek island of Corfu, reachable by ferry via Sarandë. Within town, most sights are walkable, though cars or boats are useful for reaching remote beaches.
Life in Himarë remains slower-paced than in larger coastal resorts. The town’s Orthodox churches, bilingual signs, and family-run inns evoke its cross-cultural heritage. During summer, it transforms into a relaxed Riviera retreat combining Mediterranean charm, historical depth, and striking natural beauty.
