Established: 1996
Area: Approximately 80 square kilometers
Location: Tropojë Municipality, Kukës County, Albania
Elevation range: 400–2,694 meters
Main river: Valbonë River
The park lies along the upper Valbonë River, stretching from the village of Dragobi to the high passes connecting Albania with Montenegro and Kosovo. Surrounded by steep limestone peaks, including Maja Jezercë, the highest in the Albanian Alps, the valley features glacial cirques, alpine meadows, and clear streams. Its striking scenery has earned comparisons to the Swiss Alps.
Valbonë Valley hosts a rich array of flora and fauna typical of the Dinaric Alps. Beech, pine, and fir forests provide habitat for brown bears, lynx, chamois, wolves, and eagles. Seasonal wildflowers and endemic plant species add to its ecological importance. The park forms part of the cross-border Balkan Peace Park initiative to connect protected areas across the Western Balkans.
The area has become a focal point for hiking, mountaineering, and nature tourism. The popular Valbonë–Theth trail links the park with Theth National Park via a scenic mountain pass. Traditional guesthouses in Valbonë village support sustainable tourism, emphasizing local hospitality and conservation. Access is typically through the town of Bajram Curri or via ferry across Komani Lake.
The park is managed by Albania’s National Agency of Protected Areas and recognized under IUCN Category II. It plays a key role in preserving alpine ecosystems and promoting community-based ecotourism. Ongoing conservation efforts address challenges such as infrastructure development and hydropower proposals within the valley.
