Population: ~43,000 (2023 estimate)
Elevation: 850 m (2,789 ft)
Founded: 13th century; developed under Ottoman rule
Twin cities: Cluj-Napoca, Thessaloniki, Verona
Founded as a feudal estate in the 13th century, Korçë expanded under the Ottomans after 1484, when Iljaz Bej Mirahori built its oldest mosque. By the 18th and 19th centuries it was a prosperous trading center linking the Adriatic with the Aegean. The first Albanian-language school opened here in 1887, marking the city as a cradle of the Albanian National Awakening. Occupied variously by Greek, French, Italian, and German forces during the 20th century, it was restored to Albania in 1944 and later industrialized under the communist regime.
Korçë’s historic core blends Ottoman, neoclassical, and early-modern architecture. The Old Bazaar features restored stone buildings housing cafés and artisan shops. Landmarks include the Resurrection Cathedral—Albania’s largest Orthodox church—and the Mirahori Mosque, one of the country’s oldest Islamic monuments. Museums such as the National Museum of Medieval Art and the National Education Museum (Mësonjëtorja) preserve the city’s artistic and intellectual legacy.
Korçë remains a regional economic hub for light industry, textiles, and food processing. The Birra Korça brewery, established 1928, is Albania’s oldest and hosts a major annual beer festival. Agriculture in the surrounding plateau focuses on wheat, apples, and sugar beets, while nearby Maliq operates a sugar refinery. Educational institutions continue the city’s tradition as a learning center, including prominent secondary schools and a university branch.
With its high-altitude climate and alpine views, Korçë attracts visitors to its bazaars, museums, and festivals. Nearby, the village of Voskopojë offers Byzantine-era churches with frescoes, and Prespa Lakes National Park provides opportunities for hiking and bird-watching. The city’s tree-lined boulevards, serenades, and mix of Orthodox and Ottoman heritage make it a distinctive cultural destination in southeastern Albania.
