Elevation: ~750 m (2,460 ft)
Population: Fewer than 20 permanent families
National park area: 2,630 ha (designated 1966)
Status: Protected Historic Centre (since 2017)
Main access: 72 km northeast of Shkodër via Qafë Thore Pass
Encircled by the Shala and Prokletije ranges, Theth sits in a glacial valley noted for pristine rivers, beech forests, and karst formations. Snow often cuts off access in winter. The park’s biodiversity includes mountain trout, eagles, and rare alpine flora. Nearby peaks such as Maja e Jezercës (2,694 m) and Mount Radohima dominate the skyline, while waterfalls, canyons, and springs create dramatic scenery.
Legend says Theth was founded about 400 years ago by six brothers seeking refuge from Ottoman religious conversion. The settlement remained predominantly Catholic, centered on its 1892 stone church. Traditional “kulla” (tower houses) once served as shelters during blood feuds under the Kanun customary law; the best-known, Kulla e Ngujimit, is now open to visitors. In 2017 the Ministry of Culture designated the village a protected historic zone for its vernacular architecture and street pattern.
Highlights include the Church of Theth, the ethnographic museum in a fortified tower, the 30-meter-high Grunas Waterfall, and the turquoise Blue Eye spring near Ndërlysaj. The valley is also the gateway to the famed 14 km Theth-to-Valbona Valley trek, a signature route of the Albanian Alps.
Once isolated, Theth has grown into a key eco-tourism hub with family-run guesthouses and marked trails. A paved mountain road from Shkodër (about 2 hours) now ensures seasonal access, though winter travel remains limited. Local initiatives, including the Balkans Peace Park project, promote sustainable tourism and preservation of its mountain heritage.
