The first Greek city to stop is Kastoria , known for its leather trade. Kastoria is a mountainous region filled with Byzantine churches, Ottoman villages, and beautiful lakes. The city is located on a lake, nestled between limestone mountains, and has been in the same place since the 10th century. It was probably founded as a trading city. It was definitely a merchant city in the 14th century when it became known as a center for the fur trade.
We continue to Meteora to visit two of the UNESCO World Heritage listed Meteora monasteries (comfortable shoes recommended). Rising from the plain of Thessaly on mainland Greece, Meteora is a fascinating group of vertical rocks, reaching up to 300 meters high, that time has turned into strange and beautiful formations. And high on these rocks are the Meteora monasteries , which seem to hang in mid-air above the rocks, and are some of the most fairy-tale magical attractions in all of Greece. Built from 1356 onwards, there were once 24 monasteries, but that number has dwindled over the centuries, and today there are only six monasteries that are still occupied.
One of the best ways to explore these sacred sites, which have been proclaimed World Heritage Sites by UNESCO, is on foot, walking between them.
